The Department

The Department of Justice works to develop law policy that helps ensure a fair, efficient and accessible justice system for all Canadians, and it provides legal support for the federal government.

We serve Canadians by acting as the Government's law firm. Our responsibilities reflect the dual role of the Minister of Justice, who is also the Attorney General of Canada. The role of the Minister includes managing questions of policy and their relation to the justice system, and the Attorney General is the chief law officer of the Crown.

As it has throughout its rich history extending over 140 years, the Department of Justice strives for excellence in the practice of law. It is a leader in Canada and internationally and at the forefront of legal issues that are relevant to the daily lives of Canadians - issues such as human rights, public security, electronic government and bio-technology.
