The Honourable Myra B. Bielby, a Judge of the Court of Queen’s
Bench of Alberta, is appointed to the Court of Appeal in Edmonton to fill a
new pool position.
Madam Justice Bielby was appointed to the Court of Queen’s Bench and as a member ex officio of the Court of Appeal of Alberta
in 1990. As a member of that Court, she was active in many capacities, including
as Board Member of the National Judicial Institute, Co-Chair of the Commercial
Practice Committee, Court of Queen’s Bench and Co-Chair of the Public
Education Committee of the Canadian Superior Courts Judges Association, to
name a few. She was also co-author and producer of “Try Judging,” a
program designed to educate students on the role of judges.
Prior to her appointment to the Court of Queen’s Bench, she practised
with Field & Field (1975-1990). She was a member of the bars of Alberta
and the Northwest Territories.
The Honourable Joanne H. Goss, a Judge of the Provincial
Court of Alberta, is appointed to the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta
in Edmonton to replace Madam Justice M.B. Bielby, who was appointed to
the Court of Appeal.
Madam Justice Goss was appointed a Judge of the Provincial Court of Alberta,
Family and Youth Division, in September 1999. As a member of that court, she
was active in the National Judicial Institute and as Chair of the Edmonton
Provincial Court Judicial Resolution Program. Prior to her appointment to the
Provincial Court, she practised with Miller Thompson (1985-1999), formerly
Cook, Duke, Cox, in the areas of alternate dispute resolution, personal injury
and family law. She was active in many professional organizations, including
as trainer and workshop leader in the areas of mediation, arbitration and ADR
(1990-1999), Chair of the Arbitration and Mediation Institute of Canada Inc.
(1992-1996) and board member of the Canadian Foundation for Dispute Resolution
(1995-1999), to name only a few. She was called to the Alberta Bar in 1984.
