OTTAWA, June 18, 2010 - The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:
The Honourable Robert Mainville is appointed to the Federal Court of Appeal to replace Mr. Justice G. Létourneau, who elected to become a supernumerary judge as of December 13, 2008.
Mr. Justice Mainville was appointed to the Federal Court in June 2009. In November 2009, he was appointed judge of the Court Martial Appeal Court as well as judicial member of the Competition Tribunal. Mr. Justice Mainville received a Bachelor of Civil Law (LL.L.) from the Université de Montréal in 1975 and a Masters of Law Degree (LL.M.) from McGill University in 2000. He was admitted to the Bar of Quebec in 1976. At the time of his appointment to the Federal Court, he was a partner at Gowlings (Montréal) (2003-2009), and head of their national practice group on Aboriginal law. Prior to that, he was a partner at Mainville and Associates (1992-2002), and an associate at O'Reily, Mainville (1989-1992).
Mr. Justice Mainville has developed an expertise in Aboriginal law, industrial relations, commercial law, constitutional and administrative law.
This appointment is effective immediately.
