OTTAWA, August 6, 2010 - The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:
The Honourable Glen H. Poelman, a lawyer with Macleod Dixon LLP (Calgary), is appointed Judge of the Court of Queen's Bench of Alberta in Calgary, to replace Mr. Justice S.J. LoVecchio, who elected to become a supernumerary judge as of April 25, 2010.
Mr. Justice Poelman received a Bachelor of Arts (B.A. - Political Science) from the University of Calgary and a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from Queen's University. He was admitted to the Alberta Bar in 1983.
Mr. Justice Poelman practised with Macleod Dixon LLP beginning in 1983. His main area of practice was civil litigation, with an emphasis on oil and gas, commercial law, intellectual property and employment law. He has extensive experience in tort actions and insurance defence litigation, commercial arbitrations and mediations.
Mr. Justice Poelman was a past chairman of the Conflicts Committee and a past member of the Executive Committee of the Partnership Review Committee at Macleod Dixon LLP. He was a member of the Prairie Employment Mediation Commission (ADR) for administrators and staff of non-public schools. He has been a speaker at numerous conferences and author of published papers on a variety of employment law matters and civil litigation.
This appointment is effective immediately.
