MANITOBA JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA, October 1, 2010 – The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:

The Honourable Gérald L. Chartier, Senior Counsel with the Department of Justice Canada in Winnipeg, is appointed a Judge of the Court of Queen’s Bench of Manitoba to replace Mr. Justice J. Scurfield, who passed away on November 14, 2009.

Mr. Justice Chartier received a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in 1982 from the University of Manitoba and a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) in 1985 from the University of Moncton. He was admitted to the Manitoba Bar in 1986.

Mr. Justice Chartier has been Senior Counsel, Tax Litigation (1997-2010) and Senior Counsel, Civil Litigation (1990-1997) at the Department of Justice Canada. He was Counsel for the Public Trustee of Manitoba (1986-1987 and 1989-1990) and an associate with Hogue Kushnier (1987-1988). His main areas of practice are tax litigation and aboriginal tax law.

Mr. Justice Chartier was a member of the Prairie Region Law and Litigation Committee and a member of the Winnipeg Regional Office Litigation Committee at the Department of Justice (2003-2008). He was also a member of l’Association des juristes d’expression française du Manitoba. He was actively engaged in several community organizations.

This appointment is effective immediately.
