QUEBEC JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA, October 7, 2011 — The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:

The Honourable Jacques R. Fournier, a Puisne Judge of the Superior Court of Quebec in the District of Montréal, is appointed a Puisne Judge of the Court of Appeal of Quebec, to replace Madam Justice N. Duval Hesler, who was appointed Chief Justice of Quebec to replace Mr. Justice M. Robert, who resigned effective September 1, 2011.

Mr. Justice Fournier received a Bachelor of Arts (B.A. History) in 1974 and a licence en droit (LL.L.) in 1977 from the Université de Montréal. He was admitted to the Quebec Bar in 1978.

Mr. Justice Fournier was appointed to the Superior Court of Quebec in 2002. In 2007, he was designated coordinator for the judicial district of Laval for a five-year term. Prior to his appointment, he practised with the firms Mondor, Fournier from 1978 to 1998 and with Cain Lamarre Casgrain Wells from 1998 to 2002. His main areas of practice were real estate law and professional law.

Mr. Justice Fournier was an instructor at the Bar Admission Course from 1985 to 1995 and in the Département des sciences juridiques at the Université du Québec à Montréal. He was an active member of the Barreau du Québec, including a term as vice-president from 1997 to 1998 and Bâtonnier from 1998 to 1999. He was a member of the board of both the Fonds d'assurance responsabilité du Québec and the Corporation de service du Barreau du Québec.

This appointment is effective immediately.
