OTTAWA, October 21, 2011 — The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:
The Honourable Johanne Gauthier, a Judge of the Federal Court, is appointed a Judge of the Federal Court of Appeal to replace Mr. Justice M. Nadon, who elected to become a supernumerary judge as of July 25, 2011.
Madam Justice Gauthier received a Bachelor of Laws from the Université de Montréal in 1977 and a Master of Laws from the London School of Economics in 1978. She was admitted to the Barreau du Québec in 1979.
Madam Justice Gauthier was appointed to the Federal Court in 2002. She has been a member of the Rules Committee since 2003. She was appointed to the Court Martial Appeal Board in 2003 and was a judicial member of the Competition Tribunal in 2009. Prior to her appointment, she was an associate with Ogilvy Renault LLP (now Norton Rose OR LLP) in Montréal. Her main areas of practice were admiralty, maritime and shipping law and arbitration.
This appointment is effective immediately.
