OTTAWA, May 17, 2010 - The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C. Q. C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the appointment of Sophie Marchildon, B.A., LL.L., as a full-time member of the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal (CHRT).
Mrs. Marchildon received degrees in nursing, social sciences and law. She was called to the Quebec Bar in 2004 and practiced immigration, human rights and health law. She served as a lawyer at the Council for the Protection of the Sick, and more recently as a member of the Quebec Human Rights Tribunal. Mrs. Marchildon is bilingual.
The CHRT was established in 1977 as an independent agency. Along with the Canadian Human Rights Commission, the CHRT administers the Canadian Human Rights Act according to procedures specified by law and without interference from the Government.
This appointment is effective on May 31, 2010.
