GOVERNMENT OF CANADA OFFERS FUNDING PROGRAMS RELATED TO MISSING AND MURDERED ABORIGINAL WOMEN

OTTAWA, December 10, 2010 – The Government of Canada invites organizations to apply for funding under four programs that address the tragic issue of missing and murdered Aboriginal women:

  • Department of Justice – Victims Fund – Victims Services;
  • Department of Justice – Justice Partnership and Innovation Program – Access to Justice for Aboriginal Women;
  • Department of Justice – Justice Partnership and Innovation Program – Awareness Materials for Aboriginal Communities; and
  • Department of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness – Aboriginal Community Safety Development Contribution Program.

On October 29, 2010, the Government of Canada announced that it would invest $10 million over two years to improve community safety and to ensure that the justice system and law enforcement agencies can better respond to cases of missing and murdered Aboriginal women. Other initiatives that form part of this investment include the development of a National Police Support Centre for Missing Persons, improvements to the Canadian Police Information Centre, proposed Criminal Code amendments and improved information-sharing methods for law enforcement and the justice system.

The disturbing issue of missing and murdered Aboriginal women is one of serious concern to Canadians. Therefore, a wide range of stakeholders, including provincial and territorial governments, Aboriginal organizations and community groups, are eligible to apply to one or more of these programs. Specific information on where to direct funding requests is available in the accompanying backgrounder.
