[1] International law has three
primary sources: international conventions, international customs, and general
principles of law recognized by civilized nations (see Statute of the International Court of Justice, Art. 38).

[2] Note that although the more usual European form of “dowry marriage”
is a marriage in which a bride brings money or property to her new husband and his family as her s“dowry”
, as practiced in Gabon and many other African and Islamic countries, a “dowry marriage”
is a form of marriage whereby the groom's family pays a “dowry”
to the bride's family as a symbol of her passage from her family of birth to the family of her husband. This form of dowry marriage is also often called a “brideprice”
marriage.
