Justice Partnership and Innovation Program

The Justice Partnership and Innovation Program is not currently accepting new proposals. Please check this web site periodically for updates.

Overview

The Department of Justice manages the Justice Partnership and Innovation Program, which supports activities that respond effectively to the changing conditions effecting Canadian justice policy. Whether it is promoting or supporting newly reformed justice systems or improving the delivery of justice services, the Program allows the Department to develop and test these approaches in collaboration with organizations other levels of government.

Objectives

  • To promote and encourage involvement in the identification of emerging trends, issues and/or gaps and possible responses with respect to the justice system.
  • To promote innovations in the justice system to ensure greater access to the justice system.
  • To build knowledge, awareness, understanding and informed dialogue among justice stakeholders and/or the public on justice issues including access to justice, racism, official languages, anti-terrorism, sentencing and other emerging justice issues, including justice related issues in the international fora.
  • To inform Canadians about access to justice issues and the justice system in order to contribute to increased public understanding, participation, confidence and trust in the justice system.

Before applying to the Justice Partnership and Innovation Program, you need to ensure that your project links to at least one of the objectives of the Program and that information regarding the demonstrated capacity to meet project objectives and financial requirements is included. Departmental priorities may also be taken into consideration during the assessment of your project.

Activities

Some of the activities that may be supported include:

  • Workshops, conferences, symposiums;
  • Training sessions;
  • Pilot, demonstration and research projects;
  • Public legal education and information projects.

Who is eligible?

  • National, provincial, municipal, regional, Aboriginal, community or professional not-for-profit organizations;
  • Provincial, territorial, regional and municipal governments;
  • Canadian institutions/boards of education;
  • International organizations;
  • Bands, tribal councils, self-governing First Nations and Inuit;

Other Points to Consider

Project funding can be, and often is, accessed in conjunction with other program funding. Applications will be reviewed carefully to determine linkages to other initiatives/programs so that funding can be shared when appropriate.

As funds are limited, it is not possible to fund all projects that meet the eligibility criteria. Projects that demonstrate that they can best meet the information needs of the Department will be given priority consideration.

The Terms and Conditions of the Justice Partnership and Innovation Program also apply to the Legal Studies for Aboriginal People (LSAP) Program, The Family Violence Initiative, the Nunavut Initiative and Canada’s Action Plan Against Racism component.
