Purpose: The objective of the Aiskapimohkiiks Program is to assist all Siksika Nation members involved in disputes. The program receives civil and family cases diverted from the formal court system. It promotes self-determination, and helps restore independence, solidarity, unity, peace and harmony. The program is a two-phased mediation/arbitration model that incorporates Siksika’s customs and traditions. The first phase is “Aiipohtsiniimsta” which uses mediation. The second phase is “Aiskapimohkiiks” which uses arbitration where parties have not been able to agree to a settlement in mediation. Individuals in arbitration must agree to accept a tribunal’s decision. The tribunal is a three-member panel comprised of an independent chairperson, an Elder and a community member. The program also uses an Elders Advisory Committee.
