The Saskatoon Tribal Council (STC) Community Justice Program believes that a holistic, community-based approach is required to restore balance and harmony in the lives of the offender and the victim so that the healing process can begin. The STC Community Justice Program facilitates the implementation of community-based justice initiatives as identified by each of the six member First Nation participants. One member First Nation, Mistawasis, receives separate funding for its community-based justice program.
The program operates diversion programs for youth and adults in the criminal justice system. The active participation and guidance of Elders is used through all phases of the diversion process. The program also provides awareness, education and training to its member First Nations on criminal justice processes and community justice programs. Other program activities include providing technical advice, coordinating training, planning, developing and evaluating programs, developing committees, developing policy and collecting data.
