The Onion Lake First Nation Tribal Justice Program is a pre- and post-charge diversion program that seeks to restore and reintroduce traditional justice practices. The Justice Program engages in community-based sentencing and corrections, and operates pre-release circles to support the reintegration of offenders into the community.
Tribal Justice Committee members, who deliver the program, are trained, not only in alternative justice processes, but also in issues related to sexual abuse, suicide and the impacts of residential schools. The Justice Committee is developing a victim services program and has adopted a declaration of victims’ rights.
In response to high rates of youth criminal activity, the program has established the Onion Lake Mewasin Centre for Youth. The centre provides the youth of Onion Lake with resources, extracurricular activities, support and assistance, all in a safe and clean environment.
