Purpose: The Nisga'a Tribal Justice Counseling Program has established a diversion program for youth and adult residents of New Aiyansh, Gitwinksihlkw, Lakatzap and Gingolx. The Yuuhlamk'askw Committee guides the program. Depending on the wishes of the participants, the program will use a family group conferencing, mediation or traditional clan based approach to resolving matters. The Yuuhlamk'askw Committee is an advisory and client-screening body comprised of representatives from victims services, justice workers, the RCMP and the Crown. The program co-coordinator acts as a liaison among the Yuuhlamk'askw Committee, referral agencies and House groups. The Yuuhlamk'askw Justice Program will assist the Nisga'a in assuming greater responsibility in administering justice in their communities and build capacity for future justice programming provided under their Final Agreement. The program addresses the Nisga'a desire to have a community justice system that includes community resources and values in sentencing and to mediate disputes based on their principles of justice (Ayuukhl Nisga'a).
