Purpose: The Skookum Jim Friendship Centre has entered into a contribution agreement with the Department of Justice Canada to manage the Tan Sakwathan Youth Diversion Program (TSYDP). The overall goal of the TSYDP is to deliver a diversion program for First Nation youth in the city of Whitehorse, which over time should reduce the number of First Nation youth in conflict with the law and in prison. Those referred to the program will attend twelve consecutive workshops based on traditional and cultural values and family communication. A full-time home-skill worker assists youth and their families, and a part-time coordinator assists in running the program. The program has links with justice agencies, Aboriginal agencies and other community resources, and has protocol agreements in place with the RCMP.
