The Confederacy of Mainland Mi'KMaq operates a pre- and post-charge diversion program that serves youth and adults in nine Mi'Kmaq communities of Nova Scotia. The program offers culturally relevant community justice that holds offenders accountable; offers reparations to victims, and meets the needs of Mi'Kmaq community members. The program uses justice circles as a form of victim-offender mediation. The program makes use of a variety of dispositions including community service orders, victim service orders, apologies, donations to charities, counseling, writing an essay, thanking police, observing court and abstaining from alcohol. Cases are referred from police, probation services, community agencies, Crown attorneys and community members.
