The Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation has entered into a contribution agreement with the Department of Justice Canada to manage the Old Crow Justice Committee (OCJC).
The OCJC operates a pre- and post-charge diversion program for the 300 residents of Old Crow. The Justice Committee is comprised eight members and has adopted an incremental approach to the development and implementation of justice initiatives.
The OCJC addresses matters that fall under the Old Crow Liquor Prohibition Regulation and the Motor Vehicle Act, and other minor offences. This gives focus to the program while allowing members to become trained in the area of post-charge diversion and gradually evolve to other community-based justice processes.
