Purpose: The AJEFS will organise a symposium on language rights in Western Canada to be held in Regina on February 19 and 20, 2009. The symposium will bring together keyplayers in the legal field, Francophone and métis communities as well as historians, sociologists and representatives from departments of education from the western provinces, the Northwest Territories and the Yukon. The symposium will provide a forum to discuss many issues that have arisen from the decision of R v. Caron, a case in which the judge has declared that the Languages Act of 1988, which states that Alberta is an officially English province, is unconstitutional. This case could have impacts in Alberta, Saskatchewan as well as in other provinces and the territories. The objectives of the project are to inform and make participants aware of anguage rights. The various components of the symposium will touch on legal, historical and contemporary issues. It is expected that the symposium and proceedings will allow for better understanding and the development of new inroads in the evolution of francophone and metis rights.
