Purpose: This project will provide support for youth involved in the justice system who continue to commit offenses and have illicit substance abuse issues. The youth will be matched with a youth support worker/mentor who is a graduate student of the addictions counselling program from a recognized community college or university program in Nova Scotia . The youth support worker/mentor will provide positive role modeling for youth who enter the program on a voluntary basis and will encourage positive coping strategies and techniques in decreasing substance use and the negative consequences of such use. The youth support worker/mentor will work collaboratively with community partners such as probation, family, child welfare, housing, and the school system to develop a plan of support and intervention strategies for each youth.
