The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne has entered into a contribution agreement with the Department of Justice Canada to manage the Community Justice Program of Akwesasne. The Program offers an Aboriginal alternative to the mainstream court process. It offers the Mohawks of Akwesasne the ability to reassert their traditional practices by resolving disputes through traditional conflict resolution.
The goal of the Program is to resolve conflict, repair harm, and restore peace and harmony. This will create greater accountability of the Mohawks of Akwesasne to their community. The Program includes alternative dispute resolution, diversions, old ways court, and provides assistance to Mohawk court by offering advice on justice matters, family court and mediation. The Program also includes the Aboriginal Court Worker Program which provides criminal, youth and family court services to the Akwesasne Mohawk court, and to the courts held in Cornwall, Ontario, and Valleyfield Quebec.
