The Recipient proposes to organize and deliver a 3-day national event in March 2011 entitled "Canadian Underserved Youth Civic Engagement Forum". The Forum will unite up to 80 youth aged 14 - 20 from underserved demographics to meet with policy makers and politicians to have a dialogue on underserved youth civic engagement. The focus will be on those youth who have barriers to participation that include being in conflict with the law, unstable housing, lack of education and employment, are struggling with addictions and mental health issues, who struggle with their identities - Canadian, visible minority, aboriginal, sexual, who lack support services and who feel disconnected from society. The forum will present an opportunity to directly engage on preventative supports and protective factors that may have enabled/could enable a different growing up experience. The content emphasis on addiction, mental health and contact with the criminal justice system could produce recommendations for policy and decision makers in these domains. One workshop in particular will focus on pathways to drug addiction among marginalized youth.
