Purpose: The Recipient proposes to deliver a culturally relevant approach to programming for high-risk African Canadian youth that uses African-centred principles and practices, Cognitive Behavioural treatments and solution-focused therapies to reduce high rates of substance abuse, gang involvement and violence among African Canadian youth. The program will consist of three modules: Drug and Substance Abuse Intervention; Anti-Gang & Anti-Violence Intervention; and, Rites of Passage. Each programming module will be for a 6 month period and can be modified to be proportionate to the severity of the offence, the degree of responsibility involved and sentence of the youth. The Program will be aimed at African Canadian youth 12-17 years old who are gang involved or at risk of gang involvement, have substance abuse issues and are involved with the Youth Criminal Justice System. It is expected that approximately 100 youth will attend programming over the course of the project.
