Egale Canada has entered into a funding agreement with the Department of Justice Canada to manage and deliver the Aboriginal Victim Services Initiative (AVSI) Project.
The objective of the Project is to create an anti-bullying, anti-violence and anti-hate crime program customized for, and culturally sensitive to the unique needs of Canada's Aboriginal communities and police services. The priority group targeted for the Project is the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community and two-spirited Aboriginal people (particularly youth). Specifically, the Project aims to reduce the incidents of hate crimes and bullying directed towards the targeted group, encourage the reporting of hate crimes and bullying, and increase the trust between the LGBT, two-spirited community and police services. The Project will use a collaborative development process and will partner with Aboriginal Legal Services of Toronto to pilot it within Toronto's Aboriginal community.
