The Atikamekw Sipi - Conseil de la Nation Atikamekw has entered into a funding agreement with the Department of Justice Canada to manage the Programme du Système d'intervention d'autorité atikamekw et du Projet de justice communautaire atikamekw.
The objectives are to inform, raise awareness, and promote the Program in order to spark and maintain the interest for members of the communities of Manawan and Wemotaci. The Conseil will: hold Program awareness days for partners within the justice system (judges, lawyers, Centres d'aide aux victimes d'actes criminiels, probation officers, para-judicial services, etc.) and also for youth on consequences of offences under the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA); train members of Elders Councils; and organize a session on family violence.
In partnership with police services, social services, youth protection, the Crown, the Court and local resources, the Program's anticipated results are to reach an agreement on alternative measures for adults, and contribute to re-establishing and maintaining peace and harmony by enabling those involved in a dispute to find a resolution that is acceptable to all concerned using culturally-appropriate processes.
