Purpose: The Prince Albert Métis Women's Association Inc. has entered into a funding agreement with the Department of Justice Canada to manage the Prince Albert School Mediation Program. The primary goal of the Program is to work with community schools in the City of Prince Albert to develop a safe, caring and respectful school culture and climate. The Program is designed to offer children at the primary school level, preventative strategies using alternative dispute resolution techniques. Participation in the Program teaches children alternative methods of resolving conflicts to help them avoid coming into contact with the mainstream justice system for schoolyard disputes where there is potential for violence against a person or property. Through the use of mediation and group conferencing, the Program stresses offender accountability to victims, family and the school community. The Program also provides programming to support leadership development and capacity building through participation, training positive role models, and enhanced parent and community involvement. As well, the Program works in partnership with the Prince Albert Urban Alternative Measures Program and other agencies with similar philosophical beliefs to strengthen relationships with schools, the community, First Nations and Métis groups.
