The Mohawks of Akwesasne have entered into a funding agreement with the Department of Justice Canada to manage the Community Justice Program of Akwesasne.
The objectives of the Program are to resolve conflict, repair harm, and to restore peace and harmony. The Program offers an Aboriginal alternative to the mainstream justice system. It offers the Mohawks of Akwesasne the ability to reassert their traditional practices by resolving disputes through traditional conflict resolution. The Program offers alternative dispute resolution, diversions, "old ways" circles, sentencing alternatives/recommendations to the courts and mediation.
The Program works in collaboration with the courts of Cornwall, Ontario, and Valleyfield, Quebec as well as with the Mohawk Police Services, Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, and numerous local agencies and justice stakeholders.
