Carcross/Tagish First Nation has entered into a funding agreement with the Department of Justice Canada to implement and manage the Carcross/Tagish First Nation Community Justice Program.
The overall objective of the Program is to provide support and alternative options to the criminal justice system and community members, particularly to members of First Nations in contact with the justice system. The Program activities include: the provisions of support and services to community members involved in the justice system, the promotion of the use of community alternatives to the Court, and the promotion of community education for prevention of family violence.
The Carcross/Tagish First Nation Community Justice Program will deliver services to community members at large, offenders and victims, families and youth and will result in an anticipated decrease in the rates of victimization, crime and incarceration among Aboriginal people in the community, and an increased awareness in community alternatives. Partnerships are established with the Government of Yukon, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Public Prosecution Services of Canada office, and Carcross/Tagish First Nation Health and Wellness workers. The Carcross/Tagish First Nation Community Justice Program will provide services to the communities of Carcross and Tagish.
