Purpose: The Miawpukek First Nation has entered into a funding agreement with the Department of Justice Canada to manage the Miawpukek First Nation Healing and Sentencing Program. The Program strengthens the capacity of the local First Nation in regards to the management of justice issues; promotes community-building practices; and remains current with the evolving roles of the Provincial and Federal Justice systems on a local level as well as on a larger scale. The Program accomplishes its goals by promoting the Mi'kmaw Traditional Justice practices through healing and sentencing circles, by conducting community and school presentations, and by gathering feedback and information from community members on the benefits of the circle process. Partnerships continue to grow with RCMP, Provincial Justice Department, Police Advisory Committee, Victim Services, Adult and Youth Probation, and Child Youth and Family Services, and other key stakeholders.
