The Atikamekw Sipi - Conseil de la Nation Atikamekw has entered into a funding agreement with the Department of Justice Canada to manage the Programme du Système d'intervention d'autorité atikamekw (for youth) and the Projet de justice communautaire atikamekw (for adults).
The objectives are to inform, raise awareness, and promote the Program in order to spark and maintain the interest of the members of the communities of Manawan and Wemotaci. The two Justice Committees will: hold Program awareness days for partners within the justice system (judges, lawyers, assistance centres for victims of crime (CAVACs), probation officers, Court Workers, etc.) as well as train members of the Elders Councils.
In partnership with police services, social and health services, youth protection, the Crown, the Court and local resources, the Program's anticipated results are to put in place a protocol agreement on alternative measures for adults, and contribute to re-establishing and maintaining peace and harmony by enabling those involved in a dispute to find a resolution that is acceptable to all concerned using culturally-appropriate processes.
