BRITISH COLUMBIA JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED
OTTAWA, May 13, 2014 – The Honourable Peter MacKay, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Central Nova, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:
The Honourable Emily Burke, a lawyer with Emily Burke Arbitration & Dispute Resolution Services in Vancouver, is appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of British Columbia (Vancouver) to fill a pool position created by An Act to Amend the Judges Act (S.C. 2008).
Madam Justice Burke received a Bachelor of Laws from Dalhousie University in 1981 and was admitted to the Bar of British Columbia in 1982. She acquired her designation as a mediator and arbitrator from the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators in 2011.
Madam Justice Burke practised with Emily Burke Arbitration & Dispute Resolution Services from 1995 to 2014. Her main areas of practice were arbitration, mediation and dispute resolution. She began serving as a part-time member of the Public Service Labour Relations Board in 2013, was vice-chair of the Labour Relations Board of British Columbia from 1990 to 1999, and acted as Registrar in 1996. She also practised with Alexander, Holburn, Beaudin and Lang from 1986 to 1990, and with Lawson, Lundell, Lawson & McIntosh from 1982 to 1984.
She has held various positions with the Arbitrators' Association of British Columbia and the British Columbia Council of Administrative Tribunals. She had been a member of the Joint Advisory Committee for the Collective Agreement Arbitration Bureau since 2004 and the National Academy of Arbitrators since 2006.
This appointment is effectively immediately.
