Goal:

To support the provision of improved access to justice services (legal aid, Aboriginal Courtwork, and public legal education and information) in the three territories

Objectives:

Consolidate federal contribution funding for territorial legal aid (criminal and civil), Aboriginal Courtwork and public legal education and information services under one agreement; Support the territories in responding to access to justice services needs to address population and territorial delivery circumstances; Provide financial, administrative and program flexibility to access to justice services recognizing the unique circumstances of the North; Implement financial reporting and accountability requirements that are more appropriate and reflective of territorial justice administration and service delivery models; Support the responsibilities of the federal and territorial governments in maintaining minimum levels of service.

Administration and coordination of northern access to justice service agreements

  2. Federal/Territorial  Funding Agreements
  3. Policy Advice

Immediate Outcomes:

  1. Improved federal approach to supporting the provision of access to justice services that respond to northern population needs and delivery circumstances
  2. Improved territorial capacity to deliver access to justice services
  3. Improved territorial flexibility to deliver appropriate, responsive services and integrated service delivery models

Intermediate Outcomes:

Greater efficiency, flexibility and effectiveness in the administration and delivery of access to justice services in the territories

Strategic Outcome of Justice Canada – To promote a fair, relevant and accessible justice system that reflects Canadian values
