Meanwhile, 13% of victims were youth aged 12 to 17 years, and 5% were children aged 11 years and younger. The rate of victims was highest among youth aged 12 to 17 years (2,450 per 100,000 population), followed by young adults aged 18 to 24 years (2,105 per 100,000) and adults aged 25 to 44 years (1,806 per 100,000).Footnote 4
- The majority (63%) of police-reported victims of violent crime in 2023 were victims of assault.Footnote 5 Assault victims accounted for two-thirds (67%) of adult victims aged 18 years and older, and almost half (49%) of child and youth victims aged 17 years and younger.
- The second most commonly reported offence was “other violent violations” which accounted for just over one-quarter of victims (26%).Footnote 6 This category includes offences such as robbery, extortion, and uttering threats, among other violent crimes.
- Adult victims aged 25 to 44 years old accounted for nearly half (46%) of victims of homicide, attempted murder and other violations causing death (Table 1.1).
- Overall, 7% of police-reported victims of violent crime in Canada in 2023 were victims of sexual assault. Adults aged 18 years and older accounted for the majority (63%) of sexual assault victims, with the largest number among adults aged 25 to 44 years who accounted for almost one-third (31%) of all sexual assault victims. Youth aged 12 to 17 years accounted for 28% of sexual assault victims, and 9% were children aged 11 years and younger (Table 1.1).
- The majority (58%) of victims of sexual violations against children in 2023 were youth aged 12 to 17 years, and 41% were children aged 11 years and younger (Table 1.1).
- While more than half (53%) of victims of police-reported violent crime were female, they accounted for the vast majority of victims of sexual assault (89%) and sexual violations against children (83%) (Table 1.2).
- Almost three-quarters (73%) of victims of homicide, attempted murder or other violations causing death were male, and they accounted for more than half (57%) of victims of traffic violations causing death or bodily harm (Table 1.2).
- Male and female victims of police-reported sexual assault differed notably by age. The majority (65%) of female sexual assault victims were adults aged 18 years and older, while only half (49%) of male sexual assault victims were adults.Footnote 7
- Compared to female victims, sexual offences were less common among male children and youth aged 17 years and younger, as 5% were victims of sexual assault and 4% were victims of sexual violations against children (23% and 17%, respectively, among female victims).Footnote 8 However, assault was more commonly reported among male child and youth victims (59%) than female child and youth victims (38%).
