Fact Sheet: Parole Board of Canada (PBC)
Parole Board of Canada’s services for victims
The Parole Board of Canada (PBC) is an independent administrative tribunal that makes release decisions for federal and provincial offenders (except in Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec). Victims registered with the PBC can receive information about the offender that harmed them, including details about upcoming parole reviews, decisions, and conditions. Information is provided by mail, fax, phone, or the secure Victims Portal. Victims can submit a written statement for the offender’s case review, and they or their support person can present it at the hearing or by recording. Victims may also request a copy of the PBC decision or to listen to an audio recording of a parole hearing. This ensures transparency and accountability in the parole process. According to the 2023 Corrections and Conditional Release Statistics Overview:Footnote 11
- In 2022–23, the PBC reported 19,344 contacts with victims, and victims made 337 presentations at 199 hearings.
- The number of decisions sent to victims from the PBC decision registryFootnote 12 in 2022–23 was 2,984.
