Purpose:

The Elsipogtog Band Council has entered into a contribution agreement with the Department of Justice Canada to manage the project "Elsipogtog Justice Capacity Development Strategy, Phase II". The Elsipogtog Band Council will continue to implement various community-based justice initiatives as outlined in the Elsipogtog Justice Strategic Plan. Specific activities to be carried out include: following-up with mainstream justice stakeholders to establish more entry points for referrals to the Elsipogtog Restorative Justice Program; reviewing protocols related to sentencing circles and to address the restrictions regarding the nature of offences eligible for restorative justice; overseeing the implementation of sentencing circles; working to re-establish the services of an Aboriginal duty counsel; working to secure an Aboriginal Courtwork position; exploring wellness court models; and exploring possibilities for reintegration services for Aboriginal offenders.
