Purpose:

The Makivik Corporation has entered into a contribution agreement with the Department of Justice Canada to manage the Justice of the People Program. The project objectives for the Inuit justice project of Makivik are:
- Promoting and maintaining social peace and harmony in the community;
- Helping administer justice using culturally adapted approaches which put emphasis on healing individuals, families and the community and which deal with the underlying causes of problems;
- Responding to crimes and conflicts in a way that recognizes the Inuit culture, values, ways and knowledge; and
- Empowering the Inuit that have been affected by the crime or conflict, in offering alternatives to them that are relevant to their needs and culture.
