The Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak (MKO) has entered into a contribution agreement with the Department of Justice Canada to operate the First Nations Justice Strategy.
The First Nations Justice Strategy operates pre- and post-charge diversion programs in 16 of its 30 First Nation communities located in Northern Manitoba.
The Strategy has two components: the Magistrate's Court, which deals with matters in a culturally relevant manner and acts as a primary screening mechanism for all post-charge referrals; and the Community Justice Workers, who develop and use culturally and community appropriate methods of dealing with cases diverted to workers by the courts (post-charge), the police and band constables (pre-charge) and the community.
