The Métis Settlements General Council has entered into a contribution agreement with the Department of Justice Canada to manage the Métis Settlements Community Justice Program.
The objectives of the program are to coordinate the development of community justice programs that provide support to the eight Métis Settlements communities in Alberta (Paddle Prairie, Peavine, Gift Lake, East Prairie, Buffalo Lake, Kikino, Elizabeth, and Fishing Lake).
The program will utilize mediation, conflict resolution and family group conferencing to address criminal, family and civil matters to strengthen traditional justice values and approaches to practicing justice in the community and to support community wellness. With the assistance of Elders and community justice committees the justice program will focus on families at risk and victim-offender reconciliation.
