Purpose:

The Public Legal Information Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (PLIAN) has entered into a funding agreement with the Department of Justice Canada to plan, organize and deliver orientation to criminal law workshops in Aboriginal communities in Newfoundland and Labrador.
PLIAN will deliver a plain language orientation to criminal law workshops to 5 Aboriginal communities (four will take place in Labrador and one in Conne River, located on the island portion of the province). Translators (English to Innu; English to Inuit) will be available for those sessions where participants required it. The objectives of the Project include: to create a plain language legal information workshops about the mainstream justice system that is interactive, culturally appropriate and accessible; to reach out to vulnerable populations (i.e. Aboriginal people); to increase knowledge in Aboriginal communities of the mainstream justice system.
