The Southern Lakes Justice Committee is an Aboriginal and Non aboriginal initiative that serves the Southern Lakes area of the Yukon. The Justice Committee operates a pre and post charge diversion program. It uses community sentencing and mediation. While the victim’s opinion is influential and important, it does not constitute the only basis for accepting or rejecting an application for diversion. There are victim and offender supports operated under the program. It has held peacekeeping circles, sentencing circles, victim-offender mediations and assisted with probation in various ways for many cases. Referrals may come from the victim, offender, police, Crown and other community members and organizations. Protocol agreements are in place with the Crown and the RCMP. The Committee maintains strong links with other community agencies. It promotes training and education for its committee members, staff and community people.
