Purpose: Youth and Justice is a project aimed at demonstrating an innovative model for providing life skills to four youth coming out of the criminal justice system. It involves collaboration amongst media artists, community groups, and youth in conflict with the law in a video production program that helps the youth develop these life skills through community involvement. The central activity is group and individual video production around issues of concern to the youth, with skill development through workshops in video and new media production, career development sessions, and webcasting. The youth will be recruited from residents in their transition houses operated by the John Howard Society of Ottawa. The outputs and objectives of proposed project are: · To conduct a six-month community action project which will empower 4 youth in conflict with the law from diverse communities by offering them the opportunity to have a real impact on their environment through creative productions by participating youth in conflict with the law around issues of their concern. · To give the youth the opportunity to develop skills in new media and video production through the production of independent work around issues of youth in conflict. · To have a least 80% of the participants (three of the four youth) either return to school or find employment within six month of completing the project.
