The Gitsxan Unlocking Aboriginal Justice Society has entered into a contribution agreement with the Department of Justice Canada to manage the Gitxsan Unlocking Aboriginal Justice Program (GUAJP). The objectives of the program are to enable the Gitxsan to assume more responsibility; to reduce the numbers of Gitxsan members involved in, or incarcerated by the criminal justice system; to enable the Gitxsan House Groups to take responsibility for their house members returning from correctional institutions; and to provide Justice Facilitators for each Gitxsan community. The GUAJP operates pre- and post-diversion and victim assistance programs serving more than 4,000 people in six communities, and is active in community sentencing and mediation. The structure of the GUAJP is based on the House System, in which the actions and behaviour of one individual reflect upon the whole of the House.
